Whatever your expat tax needs, wheverver in the world, we’d love to hear from you.
If you’re an American abroad who hasn’t filed your taxes in years (or ever), now’s the time to get caught up before the IRS changes the Streamlined Procedures.
While at one time there was some leniency for Americans abroad filing taxes late, we’re afraid the Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures won't last:
Americans living abroad are often surprised to discover that they are required to file a US tax return each year, in addition to filing one in their country of residence.
It’s not uncommon for Americans living abroad to be delinquent - even by many years - on their U.S. expat taxes. Often, very genuinely, Americans moving abroad are not aware that they still need to file in the U.S. In 2014, in an acknowledgement of this reality, the IRS kicked off a penalty-free way for Americans to come forward and get caught up.
This program, known as the Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures, allows expats to file their last 3 years of tax returns and 6 years of FBARs (a form disclosing what bank accounts they have abroad), alongside a letter explaining that they were unaware of their filing requirements.
The IRS has been much more stringent over the last year or two in enforcing penalties and deadlines. Additionally, there are rumors swirling that the Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures (which kicked off in 2014) are coming to an end.
Now’s the time to come forward and get compliant before things change! That’s where Greenback comes in.
Assuming you're up to date on your tax filings, here's an overview of what most Americans living abroad need to provide. Of course, if you have a business or any other out of the ordinary situation, your needs may vary. But most expats need to file the following:
All Americans living abroad need to file a federal tax return each year, if they make over the minimum filing thresholds (12,000 for filing single, 24,000 for married filing jointly). This is true even if you are filing in the country in which you reside.
If you have a financial interest in one or more overseas financial accounts and the total value of all of the financial accounts combined was $10,000 or more during any point during the tax year.
$100 per 5 accounts
Didn't know you needed to file US taxes? Get caught up penalty-free for one flat fee. We can prepare your entire Streamlined Filing, including 3 years of tax returns, 6 years of FBARs, and Form 14653 to certify that you were unaware of your filing requirement.
Whether it is finding every possible deduction to reduce your tax liability, or providing a timely answer to a question, all Greenback accountants go above and beyond to take care of our clients all around the world.
Our accountants do all the heavy lifting when it comes to your tax return. We don’t have you do any of the financial calculations, as many firms do.
We take great care to explain taxes in simple terms that you can understand. Our accountants are excellent communicators who truly want you to understand what they are doing and why.
Your privacy is always paramount. We use 256-bit data encryption, which is the same as most banks use, to ensure the highest level of security. Each client is given a personal, password-protected online folder where they upload their tax documents. Only you and your accountant will access to the files, so your private information stays just that – private.
