If you’re an American abroad who hasn’t filed your taxes in years (or ever), now’s the time to get caught up before the IRS changes the Streamlined Procedures.
While at one time there was some leniency for Americans abroad filing taxes late, we’re afraid the Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures won't last:
Americans living abroad are often surprised to discover that they are required to file a US tax return each year, in addition to filing one in their country of residence.
It’s not uncommon for Americans living abroad to be delinquent - even by many years - on their U.S. expat taxes. Often, very genuinely, Americans moving abroad are not aware that they still need to file in the U.S. In 2014, in an acknowledgement of this reality, the IRS kicked off a penalty-free way for Americans to come forward and get caught up.
This program, known as the Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures, allows expats to file their last 3 years of tax returns and 6 years of FBARs (a form disclosing what bank accounts they have abroad), alongside a letter explaining that they were unaware of their filing requirements.
The IRS has been much more stringent over the last year or two in enforcing penalties and deadlines. Additionally, there are rumors swirling that the Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures (which kicked off in 2014) are coming to an end.
Now’s the time to come forward and get compliant before things change! That’s where Greenback comes in.
