Can I Switch to Greenback Mid-Season If I’ve Already Started My Return With Another Preparer?
Yes, you can switch from a competitor to Greenback anytime. We regularly take on mid-season returns from clients who’ve started with another preparer (a U.S.-based CPA, an online tax tool, or another expat tax service) and have decided to switch.
How the handoff usually works:
- Share what’s done: If a prior preparer started your return but didn’t file, share whatever drafts or documents you have
- Upload supporting docs: Use the Greenback portal as you would for any return
- Fresh review: Your accountant reviews everything from scratch to make sure expat-specific forms and credits are handled correctly
- Standard filing: Filing happens as normal once the draft is reviewed and approved
There’s no cutoff date for switching, but later in the season means tighter timelines. If the federal April 15 deadline is approaching, your accountant may recommend filing an extension so your return gets the time it needs. For pricing, see the services and pricing page.
