When Was Greenback Founded, and What’s the Story Behind the Company?

Greenback Expat Tax Services was founded in 2009 by Carrie and David McKeegan, two American expats living in the UK who were frustrated by how confusing and expensive U.S. expat tax filing had become for Americans abroad. They built Greenback to fix that: a customer-centric tax preparation firm staffed by U.S.-credentialed accountants with deep expat tax expertise, run virtually so it could serve clients anywhere in the world.

Since 2009, Greenback has filed more than 71,000 expat tax returns for over 23,000 American clients across over 190 countries and territories. While expat tax remains our specialty, our accountants also support U.S.-based filers and Americans returning home.

A few things that have stayed the same since day one:

  • U.S.-credentialed accountants: Every return is prepared by a CPA or IRS Enrolled Agent with deep expat tax expertise
  • In-house only: Greenback does not outsource return preparation
  • Flat-fee pricing: Transparent so you know your total cost before any work begins
  • Fully virtual: Team members across 14 time zones
