Emily’s Expat Story in Chile

Emily’s Expat Story in Chile
Updated on April 9, 2024

Meet Emily, an expat living in Chile since 2010.

Personal and professional reasons often drive the decision to move to a new country. For Emily, the desire to explore the world and pursue professional opportunities abroad led her to Chile. Despite missing the conveniences and clean roads back home, she appreciates the beautiful nature that surrounds her and has learned a lot about humanity, tolerance, flexibility, and compassion through her international moves.

When it comes to expat life, flexibility and willingness to adapt to new customs are important traits to have. While the biggest reward of being an expat is learning about different cultures and worldviews, the biggest challenge is being far from family. It can be difficult to adjust to new surroundings, but finding a community of expat friends who share similar values and interests can make all the difference.

As an expat, navigating cultural differences, taxes, and administrative requirements can be challenging, but with the right resources and mindset, it’s possible to thrive in a new country abroad.  Initially, Emily had limited knowledge of taxes and was unsure of how to file her US taxes while living abroad in Chile.

“Luckily, my parents told me about Greenback, an expat tax service that makes taxes easy for expats. Prior to finding Greenback, I had no income and was a university student.”

Emily, who has been working with Greenback for over ten years, highly recommends their efficient, simple, and prompt services. She particularly appreciates the availability and quick response time of her Greenback accountant. Emily was initially hesitant to share her personal financial documents online, but Greenback’s secure platform eased her worries.

“For those still on the fence about signing up with Greenback, I would say that if you can afford it, it’s worth it. Expat life can be challenging, but with the right resources, you can make the most of your experience abroad.”
