Stuart’s Expat Story in Australia

Stuart’s Expat Story in Australia
Updated on April 9, 2024

Meet Stuart, an expat living in Australia for 34 years. Stuart did not know he had to file US taxes until about 25 years into his expat journey.

Stuart’s move abroad was motivated by a business opportunity, and he chose to live in Australia because of the weather and sports. For Stuart, the biggest challenge of being an expat is missing family events, but the biggest reward is being part of new cultures and meeting great people.

For Stuart, the community in Australia looks very local-centric, with sports and loyalty to local teams being essential. Moving abroad has taught Stuart that it’s a big world outside the US, and he wishes he had visited home more often.

What has this international move taught you?
“Its a big world out there outside of the USA”

According to Stuart, an essential skill or trait to have as an expat is flexibility and understanding that other cultures are not wrong; they are just different. Stuart’s move abroad has positively impacted his work and career, giving him a diverse experience.

Living as an expat can be an exciting and life-changing experience, but it also comes with its own set of challenges, including navigating the complex world of expat taxes. Many US citizens living abroad for an extended period may not realize that they are still required to file taxes with the IRS.

Before finding Greenback, Stuart did not file his US expat taxes. He has been working with Greenback for five years and couldn’t be happier. Stuart chose Greenback over other tax organizations because of our user-friendly interface and excellent customer service. For anyone just starting their expat journey, Stuart advises not to delay and to get started with filing your taxes.

Why did you choose Greenback over the alternatives?
“They have the easiest user interfaces of any tax organization and have always been easy to do business with. Good value for money.”

One of the most significant benefits of working with Greenback for Stuart has been peace of mind. Stuart describes Greenback as easy to use and very professional for anyone on the fence about signing up. His favorite thing about working with his Greenback accountant is that everyone he has dealt with has been efficient, knowledgeable, and approachable.
