Tax Prep Process

5 easy steps to simplified US expat tax preparation!

Below, you will find a brief overview of how we work with you once you engage us to provide expat tax preparation services. We do our best to make things simple and easy for you, while we diligently work behind the scenes to try to make sure you pay the least amount of US tax required by law.

Step 1: Create Your Account & Upload Tax Documents

When you decide to work with Greenback, the first step is to register and simply upload your tax documents through our safe and secure data portal. Need to catch up on multiple years of returns? Have state filing requirements? Don’t know exactly what you need to do? The portal aka Greenback Tax Companion will walk you through the process.

Step 2: Meet Your Accountant

After submitting your information, your personal CPA or IRS Enrolled Agent will contact you to answer your questions and explain the process. We like to call them accountants, but some of our customers call them their “US tax heroes.”

Step 3: Hassle-Free Tax Prep

This is where the magic happens. Your accountant will work with you to ensure your tax return is accurate and uncovers all the best opportunities for savings and deductions. Usually there will also be a fair amount of back and forth via email (or Skype/phone, should the situation warrant a live conversation) to ensure your accountant fully understands your individual circumstances. In most cases, we have your return ready within 5 business days of receiving all the information we need from you. If you need faster service, please ask and we will try our best to accommodate you. Upon completion, your expat tax return will be posted to your folder on our secure data portal.

Step 4: Draft Complete & Payment

Your accountant completes your draft tax return and sends it to you to review. You only pay us after your draft tax return is complete. Payment will be due 5 days after you receive your draft US tax return. An invoice will be sent to you as soon as we upload your return for you to review. We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express. You should review your return as soon as we upload it. We will be happy to clarify anything for you or make changes to your return if necessary.

Step 5: You’re Done

Once you have confirmed that you are happy with your US tax return and you have paid the invoice, we will upload your finalized return to your folder on our secure data portal for your records. In most cases, we will be able to e-file the US tax return on your behalf. There are some circumstances where the IRS prohibits e-filing (for example, if you are late filing your US tax return). If this applies to you, we will provide you with the instructions you need to send your US tax return by mail.
