Do I really need to file UK taxes?
If you’re living in the UK, the UK tax authority (HMRC) may require you to file what’s called a Self-Assessment Tax Return, the UK equivalent of filing your taxes. Filing obligations depend on your income sources and personal situation, and it’s not always clear who needs to file. That’s where Greenback comes in. Our UK Chartered Accountant will confirm your requirements and guide you through every step.

What you’ll need to file
- A UK tax ID number (called a UTR – Unique Taxpayer Reference) from the UK tax authority. You can apply online if you have a UK National Insurance number, or by mail if not.
- Income details and supporting documents.
- If self-employed: HMRC requires a self-employment registration form.
- If not self-employed: HMRC requires a different registration form—we’ll point you to the right one.
What forms are included in a UK tax return?

Your UK Chartered Accountant will determine which forms apply to your situation. Commonly included forms are:

UK Tax Services FAQs
What’s included in the UK Tax Return package?
Your service includes complete preparation and submission of one UK Self-Assessment Tax Return to HMRC, coordinated directly with your US Greenback accountant. We also handle account setup, identity verification (required for new UK clients), and provide an online UK questionnaire to gather your information.
What is a Second Spouse Return (Mirror Return) and when do I need one?
Unlike the US, the UK doesn’t allow joint tax returns. If both you and your spouse have a UK filing requirement, each must file separately. A Second Spouse Return ensures both filings are aligned and consistent, so nothing is missed.
Can I book a consultation before deciding?
Yes! If you’d like advice before committing to a full return, you can book a free 15-minute consultation with our UK Chartered Accountant—by phone or email. It’s the perfect way to ask specific questions about your situation.
What documents do I need?
You’ll need a valid Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) from HMRC and your income details (such as wages, rental income, investments, or self-employment records). If you don’t yet have a UTR, we’ll guide you through applying for one.
What if I don’t have a UTR yet?
No problem. You can apply online if you have a National Insurance number, or by posting a paper form if not. We’ll tell you which form you need and make sure you’re set up before your tax return is due.
Do I have to finish my US tax return first?
Not always—it depends on your income sources. This is something you can discuss during your kick-off call. With Greenback, both returns happen under one roof, and your accountants coordinate directly to determine the best filing sequence for your situation.
Are US–UK Dual Citizens Taxed Twice on Their Income?
Yes, US–UK dual citizens may need to file tax returns in both countries, which can create a risk of double taxation (being taxed twice on the same income).
For example, if you’re a dual citizen working for a British employer, the UK taxes your income at the source. As a US citizen, you must also report your worldwide income to the IRS—including the income already taxed by the UK.
The good news: The US and UK have tax agreements and policies in place—such as the US–UK Tax Treaty, the Foreign Tax Credit, and the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion—that help prevent or reduce double taxation for Americans living in the UK.
