Can I count days spent in multiple countries toward the FEIE physical presence test?

Yes, the Physical Presence Test counts your 330 full days across any combination of foreign countries during a 12-month period. You can spend those days in 2 countries or 20 as long as the total reaches 330 and each day is a full 24 hours in foreign territory.

How days are counted:

  • A full day is 24 consecutive hours, starting at midnight, while physically in a foreign country
  • Travel days partially spent in the U.S. or international airspace do not count as foreign days
  • International waters and international airspace are not foreign
  • Short layovers in the U.S. (even 2 hours) break a foreign-day streak for that date

Record-keeping essentials:

  • Passport stamps and boarding passes
  • Travel tracking app (Taxtracker, Monaeo, or a disciplined spreadsheet)
  • Entry and exit records for each country
  • Date of arrival in a foreign country after leaving the U.S., and date of last departure from the foreign country before returning

A few nomad-friendly mechanics:

  • The 12-month period is any 12 months, not just the calendar year, so you can pick the window that maximizes foreign days
  • You can file for an extension (Form 2350) while still qualifying, since early-year filers often need the full year to complete the count
  • Excess U.S. days in one part of a year can be offset by a tighter window choice

A digital nomad bouncing through Vietnam, Thailand, Portugal, and Mexico across a year can qualify just as well as an expat who lives in a single country for the entire 12 months.
