How Do I Get an IRS Tax Transcript If I Live Abroad?
You can request IRS tax transcripts from abroad through four methods: the IRS online tool (Get Transcript Online), by phone (+1-267-941-1000 for international), by mail using Form 4506-T, or through your tax professional using Form 2848 authorization. Online is fastest, but identity verification can be difficult with a foreign address (IRS: Get Transcript).
| Method | Processing Time | Requirements |
| Get Transcript Online | Immediate | IRS account with ID.me verification |
| Phone (international line) | 5-10 business days by mail | SSN, filing status, and address on file |
| Form 4506-T (mail) | 10-30 business days | Signed form mailed to IRS |
| Tax professional (Form 2848) | Varies | Active power of attorney on file |
Types of transcripts expats commonly need:
- Tax Return Transcript: shows most line items from your filed return; needed for mortgage applications and financial verification
- Tax Account Transcript: shows account activity (payments, penalties, adjustments); useful for resolving IRS notices
- Record of Account: combines return and account transcripts
- Wage and Income Transcript: shows W-2s, 1099s, and other information returns filed by payers
Challenges for expats:
- ID.me verification: the IRS online system requires identity verification through ID.me, which may not support foreign phone numbers or addresses for all verification methods
- Address mismatch: if your current address does not match the address on your last filed return, online and phone requests may fail
- Foreign mailing delays: transcripts requested by mail go to your last address on file, which may be a U.S. address you no longer use
- Workaround: authorize your tax professional via Form 2848 to request transcripts on your behalf using their U.S. address
Transcripts are free. They are not the same as a copy of your return (which costs $43 via Form 4506).
