How Do I Know If Someone Qualifies as a Dependent on My US Tax Return?

A dependent is someone for whom you provide more than half of their financial support during the tax year.

To qualify as a dependent on your US tax return, the person must generally meet the following criteria:

Basic Dependent Qualifications:

  • Must be your child, relative, or someone who lived with you for the entire year
  • Must be a US citizen, US resident, or a resident of Canada or Mexico
  • Cannot be claimed on another person’s tax return
  • May be subject to income limitations, depending on the type of dependent

There are two main types of dependents:

  1. Qualifying Child
  2. Qualifying Relative

Each category has its own rules for age, relationship, residency, and income thresholds.
