I Don’t Have a US Bank Account. Can I Receive My Refund Electronically?

Unfortunately, no—the IRS only issues electronic refunds (direct deposit) to US-based bank accounts.

If you don’t have a US account, do not request a direct deposit. Instead, the IRS will send your refund by paper check to the mailing address listed on your return.

What You Should Do Instead

  • Double-check that the mailing address on your return is accurate and secure for receiving a check
  • If you’re expecting a refund, note that mailed refunds can take significantly longer, especially for expats living abroad
  • Consider opening a US-based bank account if you frequently receive refunds or US payments

Your Greenback accountant can guide you on how to properly handle refund requests based on your banking setup.
