Is There a Computer Program for Filing US Expat Taxes?

While there are mainstream tax software programs available, we do not recommend using them for filing US expat taxes. These tools are typically built for domestic, straightforward returns and often lack the functionality to handle the complex rules and additional forms required for expats.

Most software is not equipped to accurately guide you through:

  • Form 2555 (Foreign Earned Income Exclusion)
  • Form 1116 (Foreign Tax Credit)
  • FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) reporting
  • FATCA disclosures (Form 8938)
  • Residency tests, treaty benefits, or foreign retirement accounts

Even small errors in these areas can lead to underreporting, denied exclusions, or penalties.

At Greenback, we regularly amend returns for clients who first attempted to file using self-guided software, often unaware of what was missed or misfiled.

Why Work With a Specialist Instead?

When you file with Greenback, you’re paired with a dedicated expat tax expert—a CPA or IRS Enrolled Agent—who will:

  • Ensure your return is accurate and complete
  • Help you claim every eligible exclusion and credit
  • Guide you through country-specific filing risks
  • Handle all paperwork, filing, and follow-up with the IRS
