Best Places to Live in Spain for Americans: Cities, Climate, and Costs

Madrid and Barcelona are the most popular places to live in Spain for Americans, home to 44% of the 57,379 U.S. nationals in the country, but Valencia is the best all-round choice for 2027. It is the cheapest of Spain’s three largest cities, at an estimated €3,590 a month for a couple in 2027, compared with €4,430 in Madrid. Its January highs average 62°F, and its American population more than doubled between 2021 and 2025, faster than anywhere else in Spain. Málaga and Alicante suit sun seekers and English speakers; Granada and Murcia keep a couple’s month under €3,000; and Las Palmas has the mildest weather year-round. Visas, paperwork, and daily life are covered in our guide to living in Spain.

The verdicts here come from 2027 budget estimates, climate averages from Spain’s weather agency, recorded crime from the Interior Ministry, and census counts of where Americans live and where they are moving. Best places to live in Spain in 2027: 12 cities compared on couple budgets, winter and summer highs and crime, with Valencia as the top pick

Each budget covers rent for a 75 m² two-bedroom flat plus a couple’s everyday spending in that region, built using our cost-of-living estimates: INE household spending, idealista asking rents for September 2026, adjusted for each city’s rent trend, and 3.7% inflation for 2027. At $1.12 per euro, Valencia’s €3,590 is about $4,020.

Why Is Valencia the Best Place to Live in Spain?

Valencia is the cheapest of Spain’s three largest cities in 2027, about a fifth under Madrid, the only one of the three with January highs above 60°F, and the place in Spain where the American community is growing fastest. The number of U.S. nationals in Valencia province rose from 2,117 in 2021 to 4,907 in 2025, while Madrid’s rose 39% and Barcelona’s 52%.

The cost picture holds into 2027: Valencia’s asking rents rose 3.1% over the past year, slower than Madrid’s 4.8%, so a couple’s estimated monthly budget of €3,590 stays about €840 under Madrid’s. You get a city of about 840,000 people with its own beach, highs of 62°F in January and 86°F in summer, and roughly 2,700 hours of sun a year. Valencia’s new regional income tax scale for 2026 is lower than its old one, though it still charges more than Madrid’s, about €9,232 against €8,855 on €40,000 of taxable income, as our guide to Spanish income tax shows. If a lower budget and more sun matter more to you than city size, Málaga costs about €220 less per month and has lower crime rates.

What Is Each of the Other Cities Best For?

Each city earns its place for a specific reason and comes with a trade-off worth weighing.

1. Madrid: Best for Careers and City Life

As Spain’s capital, Madrid has the largest American community in the country, 14,240 in the province, and the U.S. Embassy. It is also the most expensive city on the list at about €4,430 a month for a couple in 2027, with rents up 4.8% in a year. Its regional income tax is the lowest among the four regions where most Americans live, and Madrid charges no wealth tax on amounts under about €3.7 million per person, as our guide to Spain’s wealth tax explains. Winters are cool at 50°F, and summers reach 90°F.

2. Barcelona: Best for a Big City by the Sea

Barcelona pairs a major European city with Mediterranean beaches and mild winters at 56°F. There are 11,251 Americans in Barcelona, making it the second-largest U.S. community in Spain, and the U.S. has a consulate general there. Asking rents slipped 0.8% over the past year, so the 2027 budget of about €3,950 barely moves. The trade-offs are the highest recorded crime rate of the 12, mostly theft and lifted by tourism, and Catalonia’s higher income tax, at about €9,661 on €40,000 of taxable income, compared with €8,855 in Madrid.

3. Málaga: Best for Sun and English Speakers

Málaga is among the sunniest cities in Spain, with about 2,900 hours of sunshine a year, winter highs of 62°F, and one of the largest English-speaking communities in the country: 3,945 Americans and 49,298 British nationals live in the province. A couple’s monthly expenses are about €3,370 in 2027, and recorded crime is the third-lowest among the 12. Andalusia also charges almost no inheritance tax between parents and children, as our inheritance tax guide shows.

4. Alicante: Best for Retiring on the Coast

Alicante has the warmest January on the mainland list, at 63°F, and gets only 311 mm of rain a year. Its province is home to 68,904 British nationals, the largest British community in Spain, and to 2,932 Americans, up 94% since 2021. A couple’s month runs about €3,430, though rents rose 5.9% in a year, the second-fastest rise on the list.

5. Palma: Best for Island Life

Palma offers Mediterranean island living on Mallorca with 59°F winters, 88°F summers, and about 2,750 hours of sun. The Balearic Islands have 1,834 Americans and 18,448 British nationals. Island life costs more: rents rose 7.3% over the past year, the fastest of the 12, which lifts a couple’s monthly expenses to about €3,800 in 2027. Recorded crime rates high at 36.3 per 1,000 residents, largely because of tourism.

6. Sevilla: Best for Spanish Culture

Sevilla offers a major Spanish city, with its festivals and architecture, for about €3,120 a month for a couple in 2027, with mild 61°F winters. The trade-off is heat: July highs average 97°F, the hottest of the 12. The province has 1,577 Americans.

7. Granada: Best for the Lowest Costs

Granada has the lowest 2027 budget on the list, about €2,910 a month for a couple, and the lowest asking rent, about €810 a month for a 75 m² flat in September 2026. It is a university city at the foot of the Sierra Nevada with about 2,900 hours of sun a year. Its inland setting means cool 55°F winters and 95°F summers. The province has 1,383 Americans, up 64% since 2021.

8. Murcia: Best for Sunshine on a Budget

Murcia records about 2,970 hours of sunshine a year, the most of the cities with sunshine records, and only 297 mm of rain. A couple’s month runs about €2,970 in 2027, the second lowest on the list. Summers are very hot, with August highs of 94°F, and the American community is small, with only 693 residents in the region. Like Madrid, Murcia charges no wealth tax under about €3.7 million per person.

9. Bilbao: Best for Cool, Green Summers

Bilbao suits Americans who want 79°F summers and green hills, with the Guggenheim Museum at its center and rain on about 124 days a year. Asking rents dipped 0.3% over the past year, so a couple’s monthly expenses stay near €3,910 in 2027, though everyday prices in the Basque Country run higher than the Spanish average. The Basque Country also sets its own income tax under a separate system, called foral.

10. San Sebastián: Best for Food and the Atlantic Coast

San Sebastián has the coolest summers on the list, with August highs of 72°F, a bay with city beaches, and a celebrated food scene. It is the second most expensive city here at about €4,080 a month for a couple, even though asking rents fell 2.5% over the past year. Expect rain on about 141 days a year. Gipuzkoa province has 661 Americans.

11. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: Best for Mild Weather All Year

Las Palmas has average highs between 69°F in January and 82°F in August, receives only 151 mm of rain, and has the lowest recorded crime rate among the 12 at 20.6 per 1,000 residents. A couple’s monthly budget runs about €3,300 in 2027. The American community is the smallest on the list at 604, growing more slowly than the national average, and the Spanish mainland is a flight away.

Where Are Americans Moving in Spain?

The number of U.S. nationals living in Spain rose 53% from 2021 to 2025, to 57,379, and at that pace would reach about 71,000 by 2027. Valencia, Alicante, and Málaga provinces grew fastest, while Madrid and Barcelona still hold the most Americans.

The counts come from INE’s annual census for 1 January 2021 and 2025, the latest year INE publishes by nationality. They record nationality, so Americans who also hold Spanish citizenship are counted as Spanish, and each figure covers the entire province surrounding the city. The 2027 figure is our estimate, extending the 11% average yearly growth since 2021 for two more years. The map shows the same counts by region.

Temperatures are the long-term averages published by Spain’s weather agency, AEMET, for 1981 to 2010 (Murcia’s station covers 1984 to 2010), with the summer figure taken from the warmer of July and August; several stations sit at the airport, and San Sebastián’s is on Mount Igueldo above the city. Rainy days are days with at least 1 mm of rain. Crime figures come from the Interior Ministry’s crime report for the first half of 2026, the latest published, divided by residents. Offenses against visitors count too, which lifts Barcelona and Palma, and most recorded crime is theft.

Which City Fits Your Plans?

Retirees tend to favor mild winters and lower costs; families, the largest American communities; remote workers, the cities where their income goes furthest; English speakers, the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol; and English teachers, the regions taking part in NALCAP.

  1. Retirees: Alicante, Málaga, Murcia, and Las Palmas pair winter highs of 62°F to 69°F with 2027 budgets of about €2,970 to €3,430 a month for a couple; many retirees arrive on the non-lucrative visa, and our guide to retiring in Spain covers pensions and Social Security.
  2. Families: Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia have the largest American communities, making it easier to meet other American families; Valencia is the least expensive of the three, at about €3,590 per month for a couple in 2027. The practical steps of the move are in our guide to moving to Spain.
  3. Remote workers: Spain’s digital nomad visa lets you live in any of the 12 cities; Granada, Murcia, and Sevilla stretch a U.S. salary furthest, and the Beckham Law can lower Spanish tax for eligible newcomers.
  4. English speakers: The Costa Blanca and the Costa del Sol have the largest English-speaking communities in Spain, with more than 118,000 British residents across the provinces of Alicante and Málaga, so you can get by in English while your Spanish improves; Madrid and Barcelona have the most Americans. Job options for Americans are in our guide to working in Spain.
  5. English teachers: NALCAP, Spain’s language assistant program, places assistants in the regions taking part each year; for 2026-27, Valencia, Alicante, Barcelona, Bilbao, San Sebastián, Palma, and Las Palmas qualify, while Madrid, Andalusia (Málaga, Sevilla, and Granada), and Murcia do not. Assistants receive €800 a month in most regions and €875 in the Balearic Islands, and our guide to teaching English in Spain covers placements, visas, and taxes.

Does Where You Live in Spain Change Your Taxes?

Your Spanish income tax depends on the region you live in, while your U.S. return follows the same rules wherever you settle. On €40,000 of taxable income, Spanish income tax runs from about €8,855 in Madrid to €9,661 in Catalonia, the lowest and highest of the four regions where most Americans live, and the regions also set their own wealth and inheritance tax rules. On the U.S. side, the Foreign Tax Credit or the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, $132,900 for 2026, usually means no U.S. tax is owed on Spanish wages, and an FBAR is due once your foreign accounts together pass $10,000 at any point in the year. Our guide to U.S. expat taxes in Spain covers the full filing picture.
