Is E-Filing Available for Late Expatriate Tax Return Filers?
Yes, e-filing is available for most late tax return submissions, as long as you’re not filing under the Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures.
If you’re filing standard late returns (outside of Streamlined), your accountant can submit them electronically, provided e-filing is still open for the tax year in question.
Exceptions for Streamlined Filing
If you’re filing under the Streamlined Procedure, the IRS requires paper filing. These returns must be printed, signed, and mailed to the appropriate IRS processing center.

E-Filing Cutoff Dates
- The IRS accepts electronically filed returns until November each year.
- The specific cutoff date is announced annually in October via the IRS QuickAlerts Library.
- E-filing typically reopens in January of the following year for the new tax season.
If you’re unsure whether e-filing applies to your situation, your Greenback accountant will guide you through the best filing method based on your filing type and timing.
